Belknap is born in Damariscotta Maine. She is the daughter of David Belknap and Louise Belknap. She was educated at Lincoln Academy located in Newcastle in Maine. She became interested in acting while attending Middlebury College, Vermont. It was at this point that the American Conservatory Theater awarded her a master's in fine arts.
